Burning Witches – Dance With The Devil

Burning Witches are set to release their third album ‘Dance With The Devil’ on 6 March. This album is their first since the departure of vocalist Seraina Telli in June of 2019. What does that mean for the band now?

Laura Guldemond replaced Telli just before their Sweden Rock Festival performance in 2019. Having seen a bit of their live performance I had to brace myself going into this new album as I was not pleased with the vocals that I heard last summer and thought that maybe she needed to get adjusted to the band. After listening to the new album, I have to say that my opinion of Guldemond’s vocals have not changed and I feel they do not fit the band.

Burning Witches is a band that has lineup of skilled musicians who make metal look and sound easy to the onward looking fan. In the past two album, the vocals matched the music and the band sounded polished and complete. With ‘Dance With The Devil’, this new album leaves me feeling disconnected from the music, it’s like they lost their sound where the vocals are concerned. Where Telli’s vocals were full control, rich tone and a bit of grit, Guldemond shrieks and squeals with her vocal style and it’s abrasive to listen to. It’s a real shame, the music (instrumentals) on this album are perfectly done, energetic and make me want to get into the music, but once the vocals come in the only feeling I am left with is to turn it off.

I was really hoping to enjoy this album as the past two ‘Burning Alive’ and ‘Hexenhammer’ were so good. They added a great voice for women in metal by being a strong band where everyone delivered and incredible performance. I’m big on vocals and over the years have seen many successful vocalist changes and many not so good. For me, Burning Witches falls short with the new vocals. There’s just too many inconsistencies in control and pitch throughout the entire album.

In summary, I cannot recommend this album. There were too many contrasting and conflicting elements between the music and the vocals to enjoy the listening experience.

BETYGSSKALAN

5.0 – Mästerverk! Fullkomligt perfekt. Inte ett enda svagt spår! Finns ingenting att klaga på.
4.5 – Stark fyra. Utmärkt! Snudd på perfekt men det lilla extra saknas för att rankas som mästerverk.
4.0 – Stabil fyra. Mycket bra! Har någonting extra!
3.5 – Stark trea. Riktigt bra!
3.0 – Stabil trea. Tämligen bra. Lite spretig men ändå god musikunderhållning.
2.5 – Medelmåttig men lyssningsbart.
2.0 – Hyfsad! De sämre låtarna är tyvärr betydligt fler än de bra. Lämnar mycket att önska.
1.5 – Ganska dålig.
1.0 – Väldigt dålig. I stort sett bortkastad tid.
0.5 – Urusel! Plågsam upplevelse!
