We have reached part 104 of this series of questions and this time it’s none other than Tobias Sammet of Avantasia and Edguy fame who has delivered the answers.
What was the first album you bought for your own money?
Kiss : Dressed To Kill. After my mom gave me the money it technically qualified as being my own money.
Which song do you wish it was you who wrote?
Livin’ On A Prayer. Perfect song, and then all those beautiful publishing royalties.
Which album is the best album ever released?
This isn’t the olympics, it’s art. But today I’d choose Dio’s Holy Diver.
What is the best live show you have ever seen?
Aerosmith. There was nothing suspicious or extraordinary about the show, except a performer sent by the Gods.
What is the strangest place you have performed in?
A neo gothic castle on the first Edguy tour of Australia. It was weird, a banquet, fans sitting at a laid table having dinner, holding wine goblets, while I was singing Vain Glory Opera standing in their food. It didn’t make sense but was highly enjoyable, just what Rock ‘n’ Roll is all about.
What’s the most underrated band/artist ever?
Sascha Paeth, the best overall musician I have ever encountered! I thank God twice a day for having him in my band.
Name one album other people don’t think you like.
The Dean Martin Christmas Album. But then, who doesn’t like Christmas?
Which country has the most devoted fans and best audience?
Sweden of course, or what else do you expect me to say here? There is no best or worst audience. Some are difficult, especially if they think you are a self-absorbed pompous ass who doesn’t have it. Then it’s a challenge and I even derive joy from a challenge.
What is the strangest thing that has happened during a show?
I fell off stage and broke ribs and nose; during song #3, headlining an outdoor festival in front of an audience of which parts thought I was a self-absorbed pompous ass who doesn’t have it. Now, continuing that show was one of those challenges I accepted without deriving much joy from.
What is the most fun? To play on a big festival or in a small club?
What is more fun? Having your music appreciated by not too many people of whom only the first row can see you because the stage is a tiny pedestal and you are a dwarf? Or playing in front of 20 times as many on a big stage with a hot water shower in the backstage area and a dressing room you can fit in at least half the band at the same time even? Do I sound spoilt here? Nooooo… There is this special magic of playing clubs and festivals too, let’s compromise, let’s opt for a cozy 10,000 people indoor arena.
