I går kväll (den 24 augusti) avtäcktes äntligen bronsstatyn över Motörheads avlidne frontman Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister utanför Rainbow Bar & Grill.
Baren, som ligger på Sunset Boulevard i L.A. var Lemmys favorittillhåll, och han tillbringade åtskilliga timmar där spelande på enarmade banditer, ständigt med ett glas Jack Daniels med Cola vid sin sida. Statyn, som är i naturlig storlek, kommer att placeras vid baren.
Konstnären Travis Moore, som själv är ett stort Motörheadfan, gjorde arbetet gratis. Omkostnaderna var däremot ganska höga, och för att kunna förverkliga projektet drog Hirax frontman Katon De Pena igång en kampanj som lyckades få in 23 000 dollar. De Pena skrev följande på sin crowdfundingsida:
“Lemmy was dedicated to us. Now is our chance to say ‘thank you.’ Travis will create the best Lemmy sculpture on the planet.”
De pengar som blivit över från insamlingen kommer att skänkas till cancerforskning i Lemmys namn.
Moore berättade nyligen för Loudwire att man i jakten på bilder att utgå ifrån till sist fastnade för Robert Johns klassiska bild av Lemmy med en cigarett i handen:
“I know they were searching for that hat-coat combo. Photographer Robert John had taken so many good pictures of him and I think that was about the time that they were at the Grammys and ‘Ace Of Spades’ was re-charting. There was really a resurgence for him and you can see that it was a happy time and he looks healthy and good. We just wanted to stay away from portraying him in a way that wouldn’t be proper, and he needed to be rocking, a tough-looking dude with a full face and that was the idea.”
Lemmy dog i sitt hem i L.A. den 28 december 2015, fyra dagar efter sin födelsedag… och han var för övrigt rockhistoriens coolaste snubbe.
