If I’m not mistaken this will be your first time at Sweden Rock Festival, what are your feelings about your debut gig at the festival?
– We’re really excited performing at Sweden Rock Festival. It’s the first time performing in Sweden since the reunion in 2007. Our expectations about Sweden Rock are high as the organization is one of the best in the world.

What is your relationship to Sweden and the Swedish metal scene overall?
– Every self-respected metal head should love at least one Swedish band. We for instance love to listen to bands as Candlemass, Entombed, Bathory and Grave. Other cool Swedish bands are At the Gates and Hypocrisy. Dan Swanö, from origin Swedish, is the one who takes care of mixing/mastering of the lastest Asphyx albums. Like our vocalist Martin van Drunen stated in a live recording in Stockholm in 1991: “We always knew this is the death metal capitol of the world!! You are the most insane motherfuckers we’ve ever had at any show!”.

What do you think are the biggest differences between playing an ordinary gig indoors and playing an outdoor festival?
– It’s great perform at a huge crowd, because the energy is massive and intense. Festivals are a great platform to meet a lot of fans and people who don’t know Asphyx yet. At festivals like Sweden Rock we’re usually in the crowd as well to watch other great bands performing. The line-up this year is amazing as usual.

Your original singer Martin van Drunen was absent from the band a couple of years but is now back – will that effect the setlist in any way? Can we only expect songs from the albums with Martin on vocals or will you play songs from all the albums?
– Correct. We once played songs from a different album, but it was hard to give it the right vibe. It felt like we’re covering our own songs. We have enough material to choose from, especially because we haven’t promoted the last two albums with live shows in Sweden yet.

Besides playing festivals this summer, what is happening in the Asphyx camp? Any plans for a new album?
– Actually at the moment we’re busy writing new material. Already 4 songs are finished. Of course you’ll get what you can expect from Asphyx: heavy doom and powerful headbang riffs to uptempo no-nonsense parts. Last week we finally recorded the drums for a split vinyl with Swedish deathmetal hero’s Torture Division.

Are you planning on seeing some of the other bands on the roster yourself? What bands do you think others should go and see? Except for Asphyx, of course.
– Of course! Too bad we arrive at Saturday. Unfortunately we missed some great bands like Dark Angel, Black Sabbath and artists like Joe Bonamassa. But we do hope to check out the shows of Y&T, Billy Idol, Sodom and Necrophobic. Unfortunately the show of Flotsam&Jetsam is at the same time as our change-over.

And last, why do you think people should go and see Asphyx at Sweden Rock Festival?
– Asphyx is pure energy, passion, power, right in your face music, sharing energy with the crowd, having a couple of beers and having fun.

Asphyx spelar lördag 7 juni klockan 23.30 – 00.30 på 4Sound Stage.
