Jase Old – Hemisphere

Jase Old has released his solo album Hemisphere.

Notably known as the frontman of Australian AOR band The Radio Sun as well as Star Chase and part of Paul Laine’s band, Jase has broken out with his own solo project he’s been wanting to do for many years. Hemisphere features works that are completely his own from the writing, recording and producing, but the mastering was done in NYC.

This album steers listeners away from the works they expect with TRS. It’s more experimental. The tracks take listeners into many different directions as each song explores an array of musical styles. Some tracks are upbeat and others feel dark with an edge of melancholy to them.

The one thing that doesn’t stray far are Jase’s vocals. He’s known for complexity and injecting feeling in to his vocals and I can say without hesitation that the vocals are strong and enjoyable on this album.

When it comes to the musical arrangements, they are often experimental for AOR/Medolic Rock, but after a few album play throughs I got what he was doing with this solo album. It’s often hard to take a known artist out of their comfortable or usual musical space and do something different without confusing listeners with what they are trying to express with their new project. I can say I was a little confused at first but once I gave it the additional listen, it all came together for me. Some tracks if just on their own, won’t make sense. Yet, put with the entire album, it’s a nice musical experience.

For me there were a few stand out tracks that had differences in vocals, musical elements and arrangements that I found myself instantly intrigued by. Those tracks were Breaking Down The Lie, Love Is What YOU’re Looking For and Hemisphere. There were unique vocal pitch changes that stretched and challenged his vocals. Clear and distinct changes in guitars that were being played that elevated the tracks while matched with interesting tempo changes.

For me, solo albums are hit or miss. They often have a very confused feel to them or they have a intent and clear direction in the music. I feel there was a little of both in this album if you were only to play a track or two, but if you play the entire album in the progression that the track order runs, this album comes together nicely.

In summary: Jase Old broke out on his own to do something he was passionate about and it shows. It’s a different musical experience than fans who are familiar with him will expect but they will enjoy what he’s done. For the listeners who’ve not come across his work before, this will be a unique experience that I hope leads you to appreciate his work and explore his other bands as well.
