DeVicious – Phase Three

DeVicious are set to release their third album titled Phase Three on May 8th. The album was previously scheduled to release on April 17th but due to the current coronavirus situation, the release date had to be pushed back.

Having not had previous exposure to DeVicious I wasn’t sure what to expect from this album. From the promo they looked like they’d be somewhat interesting so I gave it a spin to see what their music had to offer. I have to say first, it was a great decision to give this album a listen.

For me, this genre has many releases that sound too similar and fall flat more often than not. It’s usually a hit or miss listening experience to find a good album in an oversaturated genre like Melodic Hard Rock. From the very beginning on the opening track Firefly, there was something unique in the style and music that made me want to listen to more of this album. It was that hint of something different that truly caught my attention and held it through the entire album.

Is it a perfect album? No, that is rare and also subjective based on who is listening. Just ask the artist who recorded it and often they will tell you there are things that stand out to them they wish they had changed or could have done better. For me though, this was a fully enjoyable listening experience that I felt makes this band a serious contender in the genre and that they have grasp on their writing style and how they want that delivered to their listeners.

Having not had exposure to them, I listened to Phase Three first, then went back through their past releases to see how they have evolved through their releases. The one really notable change is their new vocalist Antonio Calanna. His tone is deeper than former vocalist Zoran Sandorov aka Mister Sanders. His tone also brings in something new to their overall sound which actually works better with the music than their past vocalist, but it’s not so different that it makes a massive change to their sound.

When it comes to the stand out tracks, I really appreciated the strong bass openings on the tracks Calling My Name and Burning Skies. Not a ton of bands take this lead on tracks so when it happens it is very prominent and catches listeners attention. That worked really well for me.

You Can’t Stop Now had a cool arrangement in the music and how the vocals were delivered that gave the track a unique feel to it while delivering a great, singable song with in instant hook in it.

As a music critic I also appreciated the jab at critics in the track Rising From A Thunder. I totally got what they were expressing on writing what they love and doing it their way, regardless of how anyone outside of the band appreciates it or hates it. I often enjoy artists that write what they want and feel over those who are trying to write for what they think their listeners want to hear.

Overall I’d say that their sound is strong and cohesive. They have a good mix of tracks on this album that move the listener into different experiences with creative arrangements, meaty guitar solos, punchy tracks that lift the tempos and lots of great melodies throughout.

In summary, I really enjoyed this new album and think listeners should give this one a listen. I’m most interested to see how they will do this album live and will be looking for the first opportunity I can get to see them live. I have a strong feeling this will make for a great live experience.

BETYGSSKALAN

5.0 – Mästerverk! Fullkomligt perfekt. Inte ett enda svagt spår! Finns ingenting att klaga på.
4.5 – Stark fyra. Utmärkt! Snudd på perfekt men det lilla extra saknas för att rankas som mästerverk.
4.0 – Stabil fyra. Mycket bra! Har någonting extra!
3.5 – Stark trea. Riktigt bra!
3.0 – Stabil trea. Tämligen bra. Lite spretig men ändå god musikunderhållning.
2.5 – Medelmåttig men lyssningsbart.
2.0 – Hyfsad! De sämre låtarna är tyvärr betydligt fler än de bra. Lämnar mycket att önska.
1.5 – Ganska dålig.
1.0 – Väldigt dålig. I stort sett bortkastad tid.
0.5 – Urusel! Plågsam upplevelse!
