Pearl Jam – Gigaton

Seattle Grunge era rockers Pearl Jam are back with a new release titled “Gigaton”. This 12 track release feels like an album of experimentation.

Where many listeners will hear the name Pearl Jam and think of 90’s era hits like “Evenflow”, “Jeremy” and “Alive”, listeners will not get that experience with this new album.

When the single “Dance of the Clairvoyants” was released it was obvious to me this would be a different type of album for the band. Where the 2013 release “Lightning Bolt” felt like rock with a raw edge on it and a number of soft tracks and the 2009 “Backspacer” was a full on rock experience, “Gigaton” sounds confused, experimental and underwhelming.

Many tracks sounded more like raw demos than completely mastered and finished. I found myself fighting the urge to skip through the tracks. The album to me felt like the weird Seattle “Folk Music” scene we have that I’ve never been able to relate to since living in Seattle since the mid 80’s.

“Quick Escape” feels the most like the Pearl Jam we all know. It’s a bit down tempo to start off with but there’s a meaty solo toward the end that gives the song relevance and familiarity with the brand.

“Take The Long Way” is probably the best track on the album. It’s got a nice tempo and has that rough edge that the band does well. Just an over all enjoyable song.

Outside of those 2 tracks, I didn’t find myself enjoying the rest of the album. It felt like a very confused album that was missing energy.

In summary: I can’t say that I enjoyed this album. It fell flat to me and I did not understand what they tried to express with this new album.
For me, I’ll stick with the old school Pearl Jam tracks.
