We Sell The Dead are back with their second album “Black Sleep”. This 10 track album is a riveting and emotional masterpiece.
Taking on the subject of the final human demise, death, We Sell The Dead take listeners on a journey through their music. In this album they explore the often uncomfortable topic of death paired with variety of music styles that will overwhelm many. It’s deep, it’s dark and with a strange twist being about death, enjoyable.
There is a great mix of writing in this new album. It’s authentic and genuine to the writers in this band. Each track on this album brings in cool musical elements, creative arrangements, and powerful vocals. Listeners will hear classic rock elements of many great bands mixed with a modern feel. I was pleasantly surprised to hear keyboards in an Hammond organ style in the track “Black Sleep”. The track really pulled me back to some old Deep Purple and Rainbow albums that were a staple in my music catalog growing up, but even newer albums from Europe (War of Kings and Walk the Earth) which also captured some deep classic styles as well. They went big with a wide variety of guitars used on this album to achieve that exact sound the band was aiming for from acoustic to distorted and heavy riffs.
The push and pull on this album where tempos are concerned is a perfect blend. Listeners will experience slower tracks that will pull them in and push their emotions in places they never expect to go. With the uptempo tracks, listeners will find themselves completely enjoying the tracks and singing along then realizing the depth of the topic the track is exploring. There is an odd twist to this album. I say this because the music is so intense and really captivated me then the lyrics shattered me. Death has always been a topic that’s taboo to so many, an uncomfortable topic then to realize you are singing about death and enjoying the experience We Sell The Dead have placed in front of you, it’s unusual yet comforting at the same time.
In summary: We Sell The Dead have released an exceptional musical experience for the music fans. This album will make you feel many emotions both through their music and their vocals. It’s creative, authentic and simply a masterpiece. For me, this is the album that I will be measuring all new releases of 2020 against. It’s so unique and well done.
