Kris Barras är en skicklig gitarrist med en bra sångröst. Dessutom är han en mycket bra låtskrivare, som skapar musik med fångande melodier och refränger. Nu är han tillbaka med fjärde albumet ”Death Valley Paradise”. Det har en aning modernare sound än tidigare alster, men inte för mycket. Du känner fortfarande igen artisten.
Musiken har alltid varit en del av hans liv. Kris började spela gitarr när han var fem år och redan som nioåring stod han på scen, tillsammans med sin pappa och hans band. Numera är den brittiska gruppen Kris Barras Band ett utav de stora livebanden i sitt hemland.
Det är en ganska stor skillnad i musikstil mellan nya skivan och debutplattan ”Lucky 13” (2016), som var en blandning av Bluesrock och Amerikansk Sydstatsrock. ”Death Valley Paradise” har ett jämnare och modernare sound, fast tenderar kanske att bli lite för mainstream. Barras låtar har dock alltid ett enormt skönt, rockande flyt. Jag är ledsen för Kris skull att han var deprimerad när han skrev materialet, vilket verkligen avspeglar sig i texterna, men som en tröst är själva musiken något som gör lyssnaren glad och förhoppningsvis honom också.
Kris Barras Bands Bluesrock blev mer Melodiös Rock och framförallt Arenarock på ”The Divine and Dirty” (2018). Den grymt bra ”Hail Mary” är ett bra exempel på det. Den ger en härlig känsla och innehåller ett snyggt gitarrspelande. ”Watching Over Me” är en annan fantastisk låt från det här andra albumet. Istället för bara en bakgrundssångare hade gruppen nu tre, vilket blev ett mycket bra arrangemang, tillsammans med en ny producent och studio. Jämfört med ”Death Valley Paradise” var den mycket mer positiv och upplyftande. Kanske lite soft, nästan Poprock, men ett feel good-album jag ofta har lyssnat på.
Skivorna har blivit bättre och bättre. Bandet fortsatte med sin glada Arenarock och med bara ett års mellanrum kom förra plattan ”Light it Up” (2019). Gitarrspelandet, titellåten och hela albumet är helt suveränt. Här finns en touch av Bon Jovi och Sydstatsrock, men framförallt Bluesrock. Man kan känna att de här tre tidigare materialen hör ihop mer. Den fjärde blev som en paus, där allting stannade upp och en ny attityd testades. Allt kan ju inte låta likadant och det är en artists frihet att prova sig fram i sitt skapande.
Sångaren och gitarristens grupp består av Josiah J. Manning (gitarr och bakgrundssång), samt de nya killarna Kelpie Mackenzie (bas) och Billy Hammett (trummor). Bandmedlemmarna betyder förstås mycket för hur det låter, men även studio och producent är ny.
Under pandemi-vakuumet, då världen stod stilla under 18 månader, orkade frontmannen knappt ta sig ur sängen vissa dagar: ”Som musiker hamnar du på en plats där det är svårt att klara sig och jag var tvungen att ta tag i en rad olika saker för att kunna fortsätta.” Texterna på nya albumet behandlar ämnen som han tidigare inte har skrivit om. Det har varit en berg-och-dalbana inuti honom, vilket förstås färgar av sig på hans uttryckssätt. Trots det lyckas Barras prestera härlig musik med sprudlande gitarrtoner.
”Dead Horses” är egentligen en djupdykning i brustna relationer och handlar om stunden då man inser att ett förhållande har tagit slut. Musiken är dock cool och har en skön melodi som svänger, samt ett utmärkt trumspelande. Precis som på hela albumet finns här en modern råhet i soundet. Följande ”Long Gone” handlar om att släppa taget och är textmässigt sorgsen, men genom enbart musiken uppfattar man inte det. Låten har en mycket behaglig bas och en härlig energi i refrängen. Rytmen får dig också att automatiskt klappa händerna till takten.
Frontmannen hade börjat fundera på ”My Parade” redan i slutet av 2019. Kris hade några riff som han lekte med på turnén. Det blev bandets och nya plattans protestlåt. Den är kaxig, ja, men samtidigt roande och rolig att sjunga med i. Biten stärker självförtroendet, så att du vågar stå för vem du är, vad du tycker och hur du lever ditt liv. Låt inte någon annan trycka ner dig. Refrängen är medryckande. Live kommer den att skapa en enorm gemenskap och glädje.
Ett tjusigt intro, med hjälp av keyboard, hörs i den lugnare ”Wake Me When It’s Over”. Spåret har en lätt pust av Ronnie Atkins och Pretty Maids. Gitarrsolot och hela låten är väldigt fin. Återigen upplever man det annorlunda än vad låtskrivaren menade. Lite melankolisk kanske jag kan hålla med om, men inte skrämmande. Det är mer som att han har ett kaos inuti sig, som han vill fly ifrån. Även om musiken inte låter kaosartad, så handlar avslutande ”Chaos” om hans kamp med mental hälsa. Här slängs lite Groovy Bluesrock in bland Melodiös Radiorock.
Kris Barras Bands nya produktion är mer Hårdrock än tidigare. Här finner vi också tydliga popinfluenser, som i till exempel ”Hostage”. Starka gitarrer och bas tillför tyngd, vilket håller honom kvar på den rockiga sidan. Gruppen åker på en stor turné i Storbritannien i mars. Kris tillägger: ”Jag har saknat att spela live så mycket. Mer än jag någonsin skulle kunna beskriva med ord. Ingenting gör mig lyckligare än när jag står på scenen och tittar ut i en lokal full av människor, där vi alla är förlorade i musiken tillsammans.”
De tidigare skivorna har en lättare, mer öppen atmosfär. ”Death Valley Paradise” når inte upp till min favorit, det underbara albumet ”Light it Up”, som ger så mycket glädje och energi. Den här gången behövde Kris skriva ner alla tankar han bar omkring på, för att kunna släppa taget och gå vidare. Texterna blev mer inåtvända och grubblande. Fast även när texterna blir allvarliga, mörka eller djupa, så hörs det inte när gruppen spelar. Det finns ett hopp där någonstans, åtminstone är musiken väldigt upplyftande och får trots allt lyssnaren på bra humör.

Kris Barras is a skilled guitarist with a good voice. Furthermore, he is a very good songwriter, who creates music with catchy melodies and choruses. Now he is back with the fourth album “Death Valley Paradise”. It has a slightly more modern sound than previous works, but not too much. You still recognize the artist.
Music has always been a part of his life. Kris started playing guitar when he was five years old and already at the age of nine he was on stage, together with his father and his band. Nowadays, the British group Kris Barras Band is one of the big live acts in their home country.
There is a pretty big difference in music style between the new record and the debut disc “Lucky 13” (2016), which was a mix of Blues Rock and American Southern Rock. “Death Valley Paradise” has a more even and modern sound, though it may tend to be a bit too mainstream. However, Barras’ songs always have an enormously nice, rocking flow. I feel sorry for Kris, that he was depressed when he wrote the material. This is really reflected in the lyrics, but as a consolation, the music itself is something that makes the listener happy and hopefully him too.
Kris Barras Band’s Blues Rock became more Melodic Rock and especially Arena Rock on “The Divine and Dirty” (2018). The awesome “Hail Mary” is a good example of that. It gives a wonderful feeling and contains a nice guitarplaying. “Watching Over Me” is another great song from this second album. Instead of just one background singer, the group now had three, which became a very good arrangement, together with a new producer and studio. Compared to “Death Valley Paradise”, it was much more positive and uplifting. Maybe a little soft, almost Pop Rock, but a feel good-album I have often listened to.
The records have gotten better and better. The band continued with their happy Arena Rock and with only one year in between came the previous disc “Light it Up” (2019). The guitarplaying, the title track and the whole album are absolutely superb. Here is a touch of Bon Jovi and Southern Rock, but above all Blues Rock. You can feel that these three previous materials are more in the same spirit. The fourth became like a pause, where everything stopped and a new attitude was tested. Not everything can sound the same and it is an artist’s freedom to try things out when creating.
The singer and guitarist’s group consists of Josiah J. Manning (guitar and background vocals), as well as the new guys Kelpie Mackenzie (bass) and Billy Hammett (drums). Of course, the band members mean a lot to how it sounds, but also the studio and producer are new.
During the pandemic vacuum, when the world stood still for 18 months, the frontman barely managed to get out of bed some days: “As a musician, you end up in a place where it is difficult to cope and I had to tackle a number of different things to be able to continue.” The lyrics on the new album deal with topics he has not written about before. There has been a roller coaster inside him, which of course colors his way of expressing himself. Despite that, Barras manages to perform wonderful music with exuberant guitar tones.
“Dead Horses” is actually a deep dive into broken relationships and is about the moment when you realise that a relationship has ended. However, the music is cool and has a nice melody that swings, as well as an excellent drumming. Just like on the whole album, there is a modern rawness in the sound. The following “Long Gone” is about letting go and is lyrically sad, but through the music alone you do not notice that. The song has a very pleasant bass and a wonderful energy in the chorus. The rhythm also makes you automatically clap your hands to the beat.
The frontman had started thinking about “My Parade” already at the end of 2019. Kris had some riffs that he played with on the tour. It became the band’s and the new record’s protest song. It is cocky, yes, but at the same time amusing and fun to sing along to. The piece strengthens the self-confidence, so that you dare to stand for who you are, what you think and how you live your life. Do not let anyone else push you down. The chorus is captivating. Live, it will create a huge fellowship and joy.
A lovely intro, with the help of a keyboard, is heard in the calmer “Wake Me When It’s Over”. The track has a light breath of Ronnie Atkins and Pretty Maids. The guitarsolo and the whole song is very nice. Again, you experience it differently than what the songwriter meant. A little melancholy maybe I can agree with, but not frightening. It’s more like he has a chaos inside him that he wants to escape from. Although the music does not sound chaotic, the final “Chaos” is about his struggle with mental health. Here, some Groovy Blues Rock is thrown in among Melodic Radio Rock.
Kris Barras Band’s new production is more Hardrock than before. Here we also find clear Pop influences, as in “Hostage”, for example. Strong guitars and bass add heaviness, which keeps him on the Rock side. The group goes on a big tour in the UK in March. Kris adds: ”I have missed playing live so much. More than I could ever describe in words. Nothing makes me happier than when I am standing on stage, looking out at a room full of people, all of us lost in the music together.”
The previous records have a lighter, more open atmosphere. “Death Valley Paradise” does not reach up to my favorite, the wonderful album “Light it Up”, which gives so much joy and energy. This time, Kris needed to write down all the thoughts he carried around, to be able to let go and move on. The lyrics became more introverted and pondering. But even when the lyrics become serious, dark or deep, it is not heard when the group is playing. There is a hope somewhere, at least the music is very uplifting and still gets the listener in a good mood.
