Devoid – Lonely Eye Movement

(Scroll down for the English version)

I mitten hörs fina, dansande pianotoner.

”In the Absence Of Holiness” ger mig känslan av att gå igenom en mörk korridor.

Musiken stegras och fortsätter ända in i mål.

I ”Man Without Fear” väller musiken fram. Synthen är lite mjukare i ”Waiting For The Storm”.

(English version)
Devoid is the very skilled guitarist Shad Mae’s idea and in 2017 the debut album “Cup Of Tears” was released. On the new “Lonely Eye Movement”, the group unites Melodic, Progressive Metal with elements of the 80’s AOR and it is a recipe that works. The band combines technical finesse and outstanding arrangements with catchy choruses.

Note that there are two Devoid, so these guys should not be confused with the Hungarian Hardcore Metal band. The group in question is from France and is sometimes called Shad Mae’s Devoid. The picture on the album cover is painted by Stan W Decker, who has done Artwork for Blue Öyster Cult, Masterplan, DragonForce and many, many more.

The title song begins and I fell immediately, already the first time it reached my ears. It is an absolutely wonderful composition, with a fantastic structure and atmosphere. Here is a beautiful melody, good vocals, as well as heavy drums and bass guitar. In the middle you can hear nice, dancing piano tones. “Lonely Eye Movement” is a strong track, which pumps on and makes the adrenaline flow inside the listener. The music spreads throughout the body. The piece has a melancholy mood, as the text is about getting out of a depression. You can feel the frustration, but also how the person breaks free from the chains and the clouds is about to disappear.

Something that returns through the whole production is the progressive. An example is how a beautiful melody snippet can suddenly appear, in the middle of all Metal. Then the heavier music goes on again, just as if nothing has happened. “In the Absence Of Holiness” gives me the feeling of walking through a dark corridor. However, despite the gloomy lyrics, it is a catchy piece with a nice energy and a fantastic guitarplaying.

We get a strong reminder of the eighties, for instance in the splendid “Martial Hearts”. Here is a calm solo part, with an atmospheric and dreamy keyboard sound, as well as restrained and bouncing drum beats. Then also tasteful, sonorous guitar tones. The music rises and continues all the way to the finish. A scent of nature seems to float around during the intro to “Destination Heaven”. Dreamy tones sweep by from time to time. After that, it becomes a heavier tempo in this smoky Hard Rock song.

In “Man Without Fear” the music floods out. For certain, the song is good, but here is a lot of synthesizer and it becomes too much Pop for my taste. The synth is a little milder in “Waiting For The Storm”. A soft 80’s sound begins and ends the track. Carsten Schulz can definitely sing, but here he moves in the borderland towards false notes. The melody is not so clear, which probably makes it difficult to sing this one. The solo part contains an unexpected, but groovy saxophone playing.

The final “Wood And Wind” is instrumental and acoustic. Gentle music with summer warmth is heard for a short while. Then the saxophone strikes again. Stronger, and more insistent than before and I twist and turn myself of discomfort. Think music in a café-program on TV. It is not badly played, but the tune did not fit in with the rest of the material and had nothing to do with this record, according to the undersigned. I had my hopes for more songs in the style of the title track. There is a development potential here. Looking forward to hearing more from the group in the future.

The singer is an extremely talented lyricist. With a rich vocabulary and a true feeling, the words and songs come to life. Many of the choruses are easy to remember and I find myself singing several of them when I least expect it. Even when I have just listened to other music, I can suddenly start humming a Devoid song. Most likely, their materials will grow better over time, so do not dismiss them at once. “Lonely Eye Movement” is more than good.
