Ricky Warwick – When Life Was Hard & Fast

If you missed Rick Warwick’s new solo release last month, you must go check out his new album “When Life Was Hard & Fast” today!

It is clear that this album was a labour of love. It’s got 11 tracks to give rock n’ roll fans something to get lost in!

I knew “When Life Was Hard & Fast” was an album I wanted to listen to just from Warwick’s work with the Black Star Riders. His vocal and guitar style has always been consistent to authentic rock and with his new solo he gets the chance to shine and take chances he may not get with BSR.

Having also heard past solo albums I wondered what he was going to do with this new one? Ah, so much! What an incredible rock album. It’s deep, authentic, raw and just a great listening experience. Warwick poured his soul into this album and listeners will feel it on every track. There’s intensity, pounding drums, intent vocals, and tons of riffage that lays out a true rock n’ roll album. On a number of the tracks there a feel off early punk punching through to give something unexpected to fans. But don’t think it’s all fast and hard, there’s also a layer of vulnerability on a few tracks that slow down with acoustic strumming and melodies in the vocals that add to the authenticity of Warwick’s style.

There was a lot of old school rock in the sound, with modern twists. One track will feel like a great straight rock track, the next will hold some heavy grit, with fancy finger work across the frets. The tracks are easy to pick up the vocals and sing a long to as well. The entire listening experience I found myself wondering what this album at a live gig would be like, it’s definitely meant for live gigs. For those who also like to deep dive into an artist, the CD didn’t hold the covers he did that are available with Spotify release. So if you want to hear him cover Britney Spears, Dead or Alive other hit songs across genres, definitely look for these tracks!

What Rick Warwick has done with “When Life Was Hard & Fast” is to show listeners his talent for writing as well as performing. This is an well done album by an artist who clearly loves what he’s doing and that has an appreciation for the rock music fans. He has delivered an album that will be considered a classic in the coming years.
